Dear Ugandans,
Our voices have to be raised Now or Never.
I am writing because “To be silent amidst a series of challenges we face as a nation is to wallow in a fat lie”. Fellow Ugandans, far too long, our values have been misplaced, and the consequences are now evident in our communities and society we have become.
The very centre of indoctrination, the Education sector has for long prioritized grades over character. As a society we have valued wealth over its source, and allowed consumption to take centre glory over production. Its unbelievable but true, most of our leaders have been chosen based on popularity and wealth, rather than their ability to lead with integrity and ethics. Sad, we the people have empowered mis-leaders with power. And, damn as a society, we have focused on the end result without considering the means to reach them.
The result of our own misplaced values is a messed up nation, where income inequality is growing, political corruption is rampant, incompetence, social fabric broken, broken families, disgruntled youth, a helpless generation, uncertain future, and environmental degradation threatens the sustainability of our heritage – planet. I can only mention but a few, What a Mess?
Can we be silent any-more? Yes and No because either way we shall live today and perish tomorrow. And perishing seems eminent if we don’t act now and change our values and priorities. We need a paradigm shift for us as individuals and we can ask the same for the nation.
A big mess, if we allow to wallow in a lie, that the end justifies the means. To hell, No! That has to change. A time has come when the focus on the means must align to the end in our pursuit of progress and development. We must Shift.
A shift means…
- Grades with character
- Value wealth generation with accountable source
- Spending that is attached to production.
- Prioritizing sustainable practices, such as renewable energy and responsible resource extraction, over short-term gain.
- Promoting equitable distribution of resources and opportunities, rather than just focusing on economic growth.
- Empower leaders who prioritize ethical considerations and accountability, rather than popularity and personal gain.
- This means holding leaders accountable for their actions and promoting transparency and integrity in all aspects of governance.
In particular, I would like to draw your attention to the issue of the Karamoja iron sheets. A shame to our nation. A big progressive shame. This issue highlights the importance of valuing the source over wealth and consumption. Returning the iron sheets is not only a matter of justice and fairness, but it also shows a commitment to valuing the source and promoting sustainability.
I urge us all… let us
- In the Education sector let us value Grades with Character,
- At Work, let us value Competence with Ethics
- In our Society be mindful of Wealth with Source,
- In our Community encourage Spending with Production,
- Empower People to choose empowered leaders with Power,
- In family, embed in our children the Norms and values of our ancestors
- In the places of worship, worship God than people.
This is a tall order. Off course, Rome was not built in one day. One step you make, I make, we make, the nation makes. One child empowered, three makes a difference. Its always the one rotten tomato that spoils the whole basket.
We can start today to work together to create a society that truly values character, ethics, and sustainability. It starts with me, it starts with You as we work together to create a living Uganda that will be peaceful, prosperous for ALL.
For God and My Country…
